Frontend systems that scale beyond the first release

The difference between shipping a fast v1 and building a frontend that still feels coherent after dozens of features.

Shipping quickly is rarely the hard part. The harder part is keeping a frontend understandable once product pressure starts stacking new features into the same surface.

The first thing that breaks

It is usually not the UI library. It is the shape of responsibility.

When data fetching, feature state, and presentation are mixed together, every change starts to feel more expensive than it should.

What I look for early

  • reusable query and mutation boundaries
  • domain-oriented folders instead of dumping everything into components
  • a clear line between app state and server state
  • styling choices that can survive repetition

A small example

Even simple helpers buy back a lot of clarity:

export const formatReadingTime = (content: string) => {
  const words = content.trim().split(/\s+/).filter(Boolean).length
  return `${Math.max(1, Math.ceil(words / 200))} min read`
}

This is not clever code. That is the point. Systems scale when they are easy to reason about under pressure.

My default bias

I prefer structure that is boring in the right places and expressive in the user-facing ones.
